about

Track 1 is "ii niji" which translates as ‘nice rainbow’ and is a sort of wordplay one of my most favorite former students came up with maybe six or seven years ago when I taught her in junior high. The numbers for my birthday are 11-24. Numbers in Japanese can have a few different readings or pronunciations, so people come up with sort of mnemonic phrases to help remember sequences of numbers (like phone numbers etc.). In the case of my birthday, the number one can be read as "i" which is the first syllable from "ichi", put two i’s together and you get "ii", which can mean good or nice. Two is just "ni," no change. Four can be read as "shi" or "yon" or "yo," and in this case if you combine "ni" from two and "ji" from four, you can make the word "niji," rainbow. It’s OK to add dakuten to "shi" to change it to "ji" thus resulting in "niji." Anyway, I did this track on my birthday, and the first take worked out to be 11 minutes 24 seconds, which was freaky to say the least, so the track name was just sort of a given. All of this track was recorded at normal speed then played back at half speed.
