Track 3 is "ryoshū," a kind of ennui felt while on a journey or vacation that involves travel. We stayed the night at a brand new hostel in Kyoto, that a friend of a coworker is opening. The building is a five-floor affair, that was originally a small textile factory or something. The interior was completely remodeled of course, but they kept the original windows along the front facade. These windows were really neat! They were that wire-reinforced glass you’re probably familiar with, you know, clear glass but with a criss cross of steel wire inside. BUT they had venetian blinds INSIDE?! Yes, in between two panes of glass! Kind of a weird but cool take on double paned glass. We thought ‘oh how modern!’ only to have the lady tell us ‘actually those are original.’ Oops! Anyway, everything was so stunningly new and clean, and very well-designed. I kind of got bummed out thinking it was back to our place after only one night there. And in any case, I always get a case of vacation blues when I’m back in the US, like just the fact that I know it’ll all be over way too soon is enough to bum me out for a minute. Anyway. The track itself uses a motif I came up with while killing time at the hostel (the place is maybe 15 minutes from where I work) for an hour and a bit waiting for the wife and kids to show up in Kyoto. Again, recorded at normal speed, played back at half speed.
